What to do if you don't want a 9-5

For many, the idea of getting a 9-5, or 'traditional' job is a no go. But it can be daunting to take this leap if you don't know what other options are available.

Why not a 9-5?

There are plenty of amazing job opportunities out there, which for many is exactly what they are looking for. However, for others, such as myself, getting a 9-5 job is not something we want. We want the freedom to choose when we work, how we work and ultimately, what work we actually do. This, of course, is completely fine too, there is nothing wrong with either preference.

The biggest problem facing those who do not want a 9-5 job, however, is that you simply haven't been made aware of all the options you have available to you. Once you have an understanding of where you could go from here, everything should fall into place and you can start living your life exactly the way you want to, as soon as possible.

Your options

There are several options and paths you could take once you've made the decision that you don't want to work in a 9-5 job. Your choice will depend entirely on what you want, what your goals are and also where your talents lay.

Freelance

One of the best and most popular options you could choose is freelance work. This simply means offering one or more of your skills as a service - working as an individual. This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with professionals, develop your skills further and make some money while you do it! You can start freelancing using sites such as fiverr.com, or even go out on your own through your favourite social media platforms, the choice is totally yours.

Join the army

This is not for everyone, but joining the army, navy, RAF or any other branch of the military is a fantastic way to give yourself some breathing room if you don't know what you want to do with your life. Furthermore, the time you spend with the military will be filled with new relationships, experiences and skills that you can easily use and apply when you decide to leave.

Go back to school

If you don't want to get a 9-5 job, but you're not quite ready enough to enter the world of independent work, why not go back to school? You could go to night school or university to pick up some new skills and gain some extra qualifications. Going back to school as a mature student is NOTHING to be embarrassed about, and could give you the skills and confidence you need to start your own successful business further down the line!
